Patios
Patios
So, depending on your budget, the following types of patio may be suitable for you:
A typical starter patio could be laid with regular shaped paving slabs (for example 450×450mm or 600×600mm). This simple type of patio can be a surprisingly cost effective way of making a sensible start to your garden.
Those of you with a little more to spend may prefer Yorkstone paving. Yorkstone paving comes in irregular shapes and sizes, which, when laid, produce a staggered and attractive form of paving.
Imitation Yorkstone is a particular favourite with Stone Valley customers. It provides the same effect as real stone, but at a much reduced cost. Indian Sandstone is also a very popular choice with our customers and is laid with a similar effect as the Yorkstone - but has a very different and smoother texture.
If you really fancy something different for your patio we suggest that you take a look at the hugely impressive Timberstone range. These are concrete moulds that have been made to look exactly like timber products! The concrete “Railway Sleepers” are highly recommended (see photo gallery below).
Another very popular type of patio is one with a built-in water feature.
The patio market has expanded vastly over the last decade, so you are now really spoilt for choice as far as products are concerned. For even more ideas, please take a look at the Stone Valley suppliers page (see below). Here you can browse patio products and be directed to our suppliers websites.
Please note:
- Stone Valley always lays a solid base for your patio to be built upon and the paving is always laid on a concrete mix for maximum stability

Block Paving
Block Paving
Additionally, block paving has the advantage that it can also be used for patios and paths. It is the finish of choice for most commercial and estate projects.
We have found that the most popular choice of block paving for a driveway is probably Brindle Block with a Charcoal Block Border. Millstone Random and Tugula block paving are also popular choices.
The block paving market is quite large, giving our customers a good selection of variations and colours to choose from.
Driveway drains and manhole replacement frames are fully accommodated in our block paving work as well as any minor underground pipe work that may be required.

Decking
Decking
Stone Valley have carried out all sorts of decking work, ranging from a simple flat deck patio area to laying a three or four tiered deck (with lighting) that covers the whole garden area.
All decking built by Stone Valley is constructed on a decking frame secured to the ground by a concrete mix. In addition, all of the timber products are fully treated against any normal timber deficiencies.
Due to its excellent flexibility, timber decks can be cut to any size or shape that you wish and it is a simple job to add further timber products to it if necessary.
Balustrades can add safety to the decking (especially if there is a drop to another part of the garden). However, a length of thick roping links between the decking posts can provide an equally effective and more cost effective solution.
Enhancing your decking with lighting and / or a water feature is also very popular.
Built-in decking lighting is a very popular choice - we will be happy to provide you with a fully qualified electrician to carry out any electrical work at no extra cost! However, if your budget won’t stretch to decking lighting, we have found that Roman Candles placed around the decking area can be an cheaper alternative way of creating light when the sun starts to set.
A water feature built within the deck is another popular choice. Lighting the water feature and the deck can provide outstanding results.
If you want to create some shade on a decking area then why not have a Pergola? They’re built using timber and therefore don’t need to cost the earth to be made effective.

Lawns
Lawns
If your lawn is looked after correctly it will help to keep your garden looking in tip top condition.
Stone Valley has over twenty years experience looking after lawns - ranging from restoring old worn out lawns back to their former glory, to taking up old lawns and laying down new ones.
When we start a project on a new lawn the first thing we do is to take a good look at the soil underneath. This is an essential part of lawn laying as the new turf will feed off this soil in order to grow into a healthy lawn. If a new lawn is laid directly on to clay, chalk or dry acid soil, it will initially look absolutely great, but after a few weeks it may become patchy and diseased as it starts to die.
When laying a new lawn we always rotovate and turn the soil in the area in which the lawn is to be laid. Any roots and weeds will be removed from the working area which will then be raked level and rolled.
At this stage, unless the soil we are working with is considered satisfactory, we would normally recommend that a layer of loam soil is spread over the levelled surface. Loam soil is a fine top soil mixed with nutrients to help feed the new lawn. The loam soil is spread over the working surface and levelled.
The lawn itself is laid using Rolawn Turf. We beleive that Rolawn is probably the best turf on the market and we have been laying it for many years. Rolawn turf is always fertilised and weed free on delivery and provides a perfect lush green lawn as soon as it is laid. Once we have laid your lawn it will then be rolled again.
We advise our customers to try to keep off the lawn for a couple of weeks in order for it to settle. We will also provide you with watering advice.
We will be happy to come back after a couple weeks to give your new lawn its first cut and provide advice on future cutting. This follow-up service is provided completely free of charge.

Garden Fencing & Trellising
Garden Fencing & Trellising
The most popular garden fencing product we provide is the standard Overlap fence panel that you see bordering most properties.
However, if your garden is in an open area and is exposed to high winds, we would recommend use of Closeboard fencing, as it much stronger than the Overlap.
We can provide both Timber or Concrete Slotted Posts to erect the fencing. Whichever you choose, We set both types in concrete in the ground to give the fence extra stability.

Walling & Edging
Walling & Edging
Although standard house bricks are still used for small walls, it is now quite common to see such walls built using more decorative bricks or blocks now available on the market. For example, Cotswold and Madoc Blocks are an increasingly popular choice for a retaining wall.
Most bricks and blocks now come as part of a “patio set”, so that the same textures and colours can be used for the paving slabs and the surrounding wall.
If your budget for a retaining wall doesn’t stretch to decorative bricks or blocks, then the use of timber is a cost effective alternative.
Sawn Railway Sleepers are popular as they give a neat and tidy effect to a retaining wall. They don’t cost as much as decorative blocks and they don’t take as long to build - so you save not only on the materials but also on the labour charge.
Four inch Split Royals are another possible alternative. These are timber stakes that are split down the middle and then fixed horizontally to vertical posts set in concrete.

Rockeries & Water Features
Rockeries & Water Features
If you take a look around any garden centre you’ll see that there are hundreds of water features on the market.
There are water features to suit all levels of budget. If you can’t spend a great deal perhaps a simple fountain set on the patio would suffice. For those really wanting to push the boat out (not literally!), perhaps a mirrored waterfall set as a main feature in the garden is an option to consider.
Whatever your budget, Stone Valley will always recommend a water feature of some kind when discussing the landscape layout of your garden.
Another popular choice of feature is the rockery, as colour can be planted around the rocks to bring life to any part of the garden.
Combining a rockery and a water feature, such as a pond at the bottom of the rockery, is another extremely effective way to enhance your garden.

Shingle & Stonework
Shingle on driveways is particularly popular as it is a cost effective way of covering your drive - compared say to the cost of block paving.
Shingle is also great for pathways - though some kind of edging would also be recommended.
There are all sorts of shingle and aggregate products available on the market.
